Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise at the age of a small child. Aunt Denise was a nurse and worked night shifts so that she could dedicate her time to art literature and theatre. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay saw how art was an effective way to spread activism. DuVernay was taught to be socially mindful through her mother. DuVernay was raised in Compton by her parents, however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family has lived for many generations. Her father recalled the civil rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there inspired her later to direct a movie about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. In the year 1990, DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. In the year 1990 she was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood, California. DuVernay discovered a passion for the field of broadcast journalism while a student. Her first job was as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to look at the trash of a jury member's home. The duties she was required to perform left her dissatisfied which is why, when she decided not to continue in the field of journalism, she was able to move to the world of publicity. DuVernay found a job immediately out college, as a publicist in the young age of a studio. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency developed several lifestyle websites including Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
